Research in progress:

Trypanorhynchid cestode worm parasitism in penaeid shrimps (intermediate hosts) and elasmobranch fishes (definitive hosts). Host-parasite relationship (prevalence and intensity of parasitism, effect on host), identification of cestode specimens and life cycle.

Symbionts of the blue crab, genus Callinectes. Infestation of the gills by the Cirriped Octolasmis and by the Nemertean Carcinonemertes.

Isopod parasitism in Palaemonid shrimp. Host-parasite relationship between Macrobrachium brasiliense and juveniles of Cymothoid isopod.

Vitamin C deficiency in Palaemonid shrimp. Histopathology. Effects on shrimp (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) tissue.

Reproductive biology and population structure of Palaemonid and Atyiid shrimps. Investigation includes following topics: sex-ratio, ovary maturation, fecundity, egg size in Macrobrachium amazonicum, Macrobrachium olfersii, and Atya scabra.

Diagnosis of Penaeid shrimp diseases. Histopathological study of infectious and noninfectious diseases reported for penaeid shrimp raised in commercial farms.

Although no research on larval development of Caridean shrimp and culture of Penaeid shrimp is currently underway, these topics are included in my field of expertise and interest. The larval development programme aims the description of larval stages of palaemonid prawns with abbreviated larval development, comparison between this type of post-embryonic development and that of related species that possess a planktotrophic larval phase of long duration and the ecological significance concerning the continuing conquest of freshwater environments by palaemonid prawns. The culture of Penaeid shrimp programme includes biological investigation in maturation, hatchery and grow-out systems and requires that the research be conducted in a shrimp farm.
